When your loans move to a new servicer
- The Department still owns the loans and the terms don’t change.
- Your current servicer tells you about the transfer; the new one sends a welcome letter with its contact details.
- After the welcome letter, send payments to the new servicer and update any bank bill-pay set up for the old one.
- Payments made during the transfer are credited to your account with the new servicer.
- The new servicer’s website may only show history from the date it took over.
Loans the Department doesn’t own
- Commercially held FFEL loans: contact the servicer listed in your StudentAid.gov dashboard.
- Perkins loans not owned by the Department: contact the school that made the loan.
Help is free
StudentAid.gov: you never have to pay a company to enroll in a repayment plan, consolidate or apply for forgiveness. Your servicer does it at no charge.
Not affiliated. Student Loan Clear isn’t connected to any servicer or to the Department of Education.
