RAP payment on $55,000 income: married filing jointly with two children
RAP: $129.17 a month in year one. IBR: $45.83 (10% version).
How the numbers come out
- $55,000 falls in RAP's 5% band, so the yearly base payment is 5% of the whole amount: $2,750.00 a year, or $229.17 a month.
- Subtracting $50 for each of the 2 dependents brings RAP to $129.17 a month.
- IBR counts only income above $49,500 (150% of the 2026 poverty line for 4 people): 10% of the rest is $45.83 a month, or $68.75 at the 15% rate for borrowers who owed a federal loan on July 1, 2014. IBR can't go above the 10-year standard payment.
- In year one, IBR's payment (10% version) is $83.34 a month lower than RAP's.
- The next RAP step is at $60,000: one dollar above it, this household's RAP payment rises from $150.00 to $200.01 a month.
- For a married couple filing jointly, the income is the couple’s combined AGI. If both spouses have federal loans, each pays a share in proportion to their part of the combined debt.
- With $80,000, IBR leaves about $162,979 to be forgiven after 20 years under these assumptions; forgiveness outside PSLF may be taxed.
